streaming movies are films that consciously deal with the esthetical
and technical parameters of audio and video signals sent over the internet
(streaming). interesting in this regard is not the prospect of a worldwide
proliferation of this new technology, but its influence on the traditional
means of narration in film.
fundamental to streaming is the process of encoding, transforming, re-assembling
and interrupting the flow of images, as well as the related alteration
of the sound. a particularity is the option to send and receive the
"film" material live during its production, unlike movies,
for instance, that have been produced with macromedia
flash. blurred and unrecognisable images or noise interference are
voluntary and sometimes even provoked. the intended presence of the
movie is only reached in full screen mode. everything happens on a rather
low technical level in order to be comprehensible for most users.
the proliferation of broadband internet access should not make us forget
that there is still only a restricted circle of people who are able
to receive motion images in nearly original quality over the internet.
nevertheless it is obvious that the issue of this web page is very specific
and rather ephemeral.
the web cast group pingfm
is experimenting with the esthetical and communicative possibilities,
and most of all impossibilities, of streaming media since summer 2000.
in november 2001 we filled a movie theatre with "made for fullscreen"
films for the first time. this web site is a result and continuation
of the project we started back then.
until now, all movies are only available as realplayer
files. they are made for fullscreen!
